Brooklyn was transferred to the Atlantic fleet by the time the US entered the war, and she spent most of her time as a cruiser escort. She then joined the Pacific Fleet during its attendance of the Golden Gate International Exposition in February 1940. She was present at the first New York World's Fair in April 1939, and was also involved in the salvage operation following the Squalus disaster.
